Stronghold OF NAMUR - UNDERGROUND TOUR, HISTORY, VIEWS (WALLONIA - BELGIUM) CITADELLE DE NAMUR - NAMUR CASTLE

The key thing about Namur is ofcourse the stronghold. It looks wonderful and is clear from the rail line station itself! It is recognizable from the train tracks, as you cross Namur! It is the substance of Namur and it is the logo of Ville de Namur (City of Namur)!

HOW TO VISIT NAMUR CITADEL?

There is a motorable road, grade access similarly to a stairwell to reach the fortification. We took the stairway. Exploring the Citadelle itself is open (for sure, it's one of the free exercises in Namur and that is an exceptionally cool thing) and we went through for all intents and purposes the entire day here. Walking around the stairwell to show up at the Terra Nova Visitor's center (labeling counter for the visits), takes as much time as is required!!!

Fragments OF CITADELLE DE NAMUR

The entire stronghold is in 3 fragments - Chateau des Comptes (Castle of the Count), Medicine (Medieval time), and Terra Nova (New Land). This land, the slant on which the castle sits, has been in occupation, here and there, since the old period. Since it's arranged at the mix of Meuse and Sambre, a fundamental position showed up great.

HISTORY OF NAMUR CITADEL

Namur Castle has been used for military purposes since third C CE. During the bygone eras (thirteenth C CE), the vital castle and fortification divider displayed here which is right now called the Chateau des Comptes. This royal residence had 4 zeniths and housed a couple of things including a jail, falconry, bread shop, pens, etc In 1519 CE, as a result of the dispute with France, the fortification was expanded which is at present the Medicine! This delivered the beginning of casemates and channels. Later in 1631-75, the Terra Nova augmentation happened when the entire labyrinth of tangled sections and casemates were made. By 1830 the strategic improvements of the post ended and it was then used by the city for various uses, obviously, till the World Wars, when again it was used for military purposes. After the contention, starting around 1977, it is as of now, a quiet, beguiling spot dismissing the Sambre and Meuse, where broad advancements happen time and again.

UNDERGROUND PASSAGES GUIDED TOUR OF NAMUR CASTLE

While exploring the Citadelle is open, the enchanting thing here is the coordinated visit (labeled) of the underground entry structure! The principal underground segments were around 7km, of which around 4km is by and by restored. The coordinated visit covers around 500m of the part! Remember Vauban who was one of the masters in making the Luxembourg City fortifications? Taking everything into account, he did a piece of the sections here too! It's so tangled that Napoleon Bonaparte thought of it as the 'Termite Mound of Europe'!!!

With entrancing enlightened figures (that assisted me with recollecting London Lumiere models), expanded accounts inside the sinkhole dividers it was really interesting. There were 3 water sources in this stronghold, one of which was a well, and today it's covered with glass and you can stay on top of it. It's inside the Terra Nova Visitor's Center! This is where the underground visit begins. Like Grotte de Han, the temperature inside is consistent at around 13°C.

During the general contentions, this spot was comprehensively used. Land Nova visitor's center was then used as a warriors' military fenced-in area. Many spots of the internal sections were showered with concrete to safeguard it more from bomb influence. Attempts were made to introduce an air filtration system here anyway unfortunately it never worked out as expected. A copy of the model that was manufactured then is as of now shown inside the entry. The top part that is evident over the land is arranged converse to Terra Nova, and that is where the visit closes.

Spots TO SEE and THINGS TO DO IN CITADELLE DE NAMUR

After the visit of the underground visit, it is doable to explore the rest of the stronghold by a lovable-looking touristic train, with a live study. We chose to walk and explore taking everything into account. A stroll, up from the Terra Nova takes you to the Theater which was under rebuild when we went! Notwithstanding, the view from up here is great!

A short walk downwards, towards the Medicine region, conveys you to the Guy Delforge Perfumery. Around here is the middle age garden as well, which we incredibly kept away from on account of nonappearance of time. Walking around further, in the Chateau des Comtes district is the beast turtle shape by Jan Fabre!

WHERE TO EAT IN NAMUR?

There are 3 bistros inside the Citadelle. Two of those are Made in Namur - at the Terra Nova Visitor's Center and La Reine Blanche, which are more like plates of mixed greens, sandwiches, ale, juice place. Another is Chateau de Namur - a 4-star gastronomical diner, arranged on the stronghold, near the Theater and Parking.
